Tyler

Tyler drew back the shades to the entry window and glanced across the street. Robert had left.

“Probably hiding around the corner, trying to scare me.”

He knew what he would do—open the door and cut off Robert before he had the chance to apologize. Instead, Tyler would confess everything, including his feelings for Robert. Why not? His mom was gone. No one else was around. Maybe he’d even have the courage to kiss him.

QP had been right. That punch served as nothing more than a release for pent up frustration and tension stemming from unspoken feelings toward Robert. This would be his chance to revisit that night from last Halloween.

Walking toward the hall bathroom, he splashed water over his face, working it through his hair.

The doorbell rang.

Taking one last look at his reflection, Tyler said to himself, “You’re just nervous. It has to be done, though. What can he say? No? Well, at least you’ll know then.”

Returning to the front door, he disarmed the alarm system.

What if he does say no? What if he’s not interested? Would things become too weird? Would that cost them a friendship? What about the group dynamic?

Tyler licked his lips. “Fuck it.”

He swept the door open, and no one stood on the porch. He stepped onto the cement. The air was cold and wet on his skin. A wispy fog settled over the grass.

“Robert,” he called. “Go ahead. Jump out. I know you’re here. I know you have the mask.” After waiting a few seconds for a response, he stepped back into the house. “Okay, guess you’ll have to sit in the cold.” Robert didn’t corner around the house and show himself.

Slowly, Tyler shut and locked the door. Stepping onto the first stair, the doorbell rang again—eerie and discomforting in the silence of the empty home.

Tyler peered over his shoulder. A silhouette stood behind the door’s obscured glass. He involuntarily turned and moved toward it, pausing as he second-guess his intentions. Why go? Why allow Robert to continue this child’s game?

Gritting his teeth and ignoring all sense, Tyler marched back to the door. “You’re as bad as QP,” he called, turning the deadbolt.

The door flew open and someone rushed in, shoving Tyler off balance. He tripped, falling to his ass, his body rolled back, and his head smacked against the floor, causing his vision to blacken and blur.

“Robert,” he said, panic and fear thick in his voice. He tried to sit up.

A chill swept across his throat, followed by a gush of warmth—warmth that spilled down his chest and into his lap. He could no longer breath. He choked and gurgled, as blood gushed before him, on him, all around him. He felt weak—so exhausted that he no longer possessed the strength to hold up his head. He reclined back onto the floor, resting on the cool hardwood.

His blurred vision fixed and focused on a picture of Mark that hung on the entryway wall, until that too faded to nothing.
